Sunflower-themed Baby Shower Cake

I love babies, I love baby showers, and I especially love making baby shower cakes! I was thrilled to be asked to make a special cake for one of the administrative assistants at the school I attend. When I heard the party theme was sunflowers, I was psyched because I love sunflowers...they are so cheerful and happy!

I needed to make a two-tier cake because of the number of attendees, as well as to accommodate a request for both a chocolate and a vanilla cake. The larger cake on the bottom was vanilla, frosted with tan-colored buttercream to look like a basket. I made a lot of sunflowers so it looks like the basket is overflowing with them.

For the smaller top cake, I made a chocolate cake with green-frosted buttercream for a mossy/grassy look. I topped the cake with baby Converse sneakers sculpted from fondant and painted with food dye. I painted a tiny sunflower on the front of each sneaker to coordinate with the theme. I set them on a fondant base so the mom-to-be could save it like a cake topper if she wanted.

Although I didn't attend the shower, I did hear that the mom-to-be loved it, so I am glad about that! Now, I can't wait to meet her little one. And, maybe a year from now I can make the baby a smash cake for their first birthday!
