A few months ago, I signed up to be a Sugar Angel (cake baker) for Icing Smiles, a nonprofit organization that provides custom celebration cakes and other treats to families impacted by the critical illness of a child. I was so excited when I was finally chosen to make a cake for a little girl's first birthday. The parents of the sick little girl requested a vanilla cake decorated in pink and gold, and asked if the baker could include her picture, if possible.
While I know some bakeries can print photos on sugar sheets, I don't have that capability, so I decided to hand paint her portrait on white fondant with food dyes, using the photos they sent me as my guide. I was happy that it really does look like the birthday girl, and I hope her parents liked it as well. (My mom dropped the cake off with the nurse so we don't know their reactions, unfortunately.)
In addition to a lot of pink buttercream, I decorated the cake with gold and pearl sprinkles, as well as gold crown sprinkles on the swags that encircle the cake.
I really fell in love with the birthday girl's sweet chubby cheeks and I wanted to do something else for her besides the cake, so I sewed her a Dream Dragon stuffed animal to keep her safe from nightmares while in the hospital (and beyond). I know it's not much, but I hope it comforts the family.
I hope that I get another chance to bake some treats for Icing Smiles because, as their logo states, it makes me feel like I am "Baking a Difference."
