Dungeons & Dragons Meets Hawaiian Shirt Party

Longtime family friends of ours participate in a "Hawaiian Shirt Party" every year with a group of friends they have known since high school. This yearly party is usually right around our friend's birthday, so this year, I was asked to make a birthday cake for the Hawaiian Shirt Party that also reflects the birthday boy's love of Dungeons & Dragons.

This vanilla cake with buttercream frosting features an adorable red dragon (who I admit bears some resemblance to Toothless from "How to Train Your Dragon") wearing a hand-painted Hawaiian shirt. He's surrounded by gems and coins (made of fondant and candy sprinkles) in his room in the castle dungeon. I threw in some pineapple and flamingo sprinkles to honor the Hawaiian shirt theme, too. The dungeon "walls" are also fondant, ringed by white sprinkles shaped like pearls and diamonds.
